RATINGS OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: A BRIEF OVERVIEW

The act of classifying is inherent to human knowledge. As the social and cultural structures of a group become more complex, so do the classifications and cataloguing of the world around them in an attempt to bring order out of chaos. The purpose of this article is to show a short path of these classifications of musical instruments that somehow led to the formation of Organology, in the 19th century.

The Islamic culture introduced various musical instruments in Spain and in the South of Italy, amongst them the mandolins’ ancestor. A result of the Arab culture that enriched the West, its origins go back to a small pear shaped instrument with round bottom, which has been used in Medieval Europe of the 10th Century.

Remarkable aspects of the guitar’s presence in the brazilian culture

Although his first instrument was the piano, when by the end of 1967, Tom Jobim was invited to take part in the TV show A Man and His Music starred by Frank Sinatra for NBC, it was handling a guitar that the Brazilian musician revealed the bossa-nova beat to the world, making the genre internationally consecrated and identified as the Brazilian way of musical accompaniment ever since.
