The Museum

The Virtual Museum of Musical Instruments (Museu Virtual Instrumentos Musicais – MVIM) brings together in the virtual space collections of musical instruments from Brazilian institutions in order to present and disseminate them in a dynamic and innovative way, emphasizing the educational aspects, thus transforming itself into a space for the convergence of collections and knowledge.

Inaugurated in December 2014, MVIM was created by the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia – IBICT) with funding from the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Fundação Carlos Chagas de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – FAPERJ).

Today, MVIM has the collection of musical instruments from the Instrumental Museum Delgado de Carvalho (Music School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and is adding to its collection the instruments of the Villa-Lobos Museum and the Moreira Salles Institute, which should be a reality at the end of 2020.

In the inclusion process, the available collections are photographed, filmed, recorded in audio, cataloged, inserted in the MVIM online catalogue and, if necessary, restored.

In addition to the catalog of musical instruments, MVIM includes informative sections presented in texts, images and videos, which are always being renewed.
