Instrument made of grenadilla wood, of a cylindrical shape, and with five parts: mouthpiece, barrel joint, upper joint, lower joint, bell. It is tuned in Mi flat. The Mi flat clarinet, as well as the other instruments of the set of clarinets, is a single reed aerophone, this one being embedded in the mouthpiece. In order to play, the musician places the reed on the inferior lip (which is folded over the teeth), and positions the superior teeth on the upper part of the mouthpiece (bevel), producing an air current. The museum’s item does not have a barrel joint.
The alto clarinet is part of the set of clarinets, it is normally tuned in Mi flat, and its strumming is similar to the soprano clarinet. The instrument has a bright and full sound which enables a good mix with other sounds. This clarinet was used for the first time at the beginning of the 19th century in military bands in France and Germany, initially tuned in Fa and then in Mi. The use of the instrument was never permanently set in the orchestra, but the Mi flat clarinet is now quite used in American concert bands.
